      B. The New Golden Rule Student Handbook should be available on-line by the end of January 2003.

III. Review the Following Sections of the Golden Rule:

Note:  The new version of the Golden Rule, for 2002-2003 was used in reviewing this section.  It is Section 11 - Student Academic Behavior.
      A. Student Academic Behavior
        1. Section A,2a.  It was questioned whether faculty are now required to report cheating based on the wording in the last sentence of this section. (Dr. Taylor Ellis)
        2. Section A,3b.  A question arose that if the Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities were informed of an alleged violation of academic standards from a source other than an academic unit, how are faculty supposed to conduct an investigation upon receiving that information.  Do they have the authority to do so? (Dr. Taylor Ellis)
      B. Student Grade Appeals
      1. Section B,1b. - Clarification is needed on what decisions regarding program requirements of departments, schools or colleges are open to appeal by students. (Dr. Taylor Ellis)
      2. Section B,4 b & c - A question arose that in "b" it states the Assistant or Associate Dean is to hear an appeal, but if that decision is appealed, it moves to the Academic Appeals Committee.  Typically, the Assistant or Associate Dean also oversees that committee.  How can the Assistant or Associate Dean then be impartial?  It represents an overlap in responsibilities.  Please review and change. (Dr. Taylor Ellis)
      3. Section B,4d(3), Clarification is needed on the student panel members.  Of the 25 students, how many students from each College are on the Academic Appeals committee?
      4. Section B,4d(3).  Proposed change:  The 25 students on the Academic Appeals Committee be selected by the Student Government Senators from each College instead of being selected by the Student Body President. (Joshua Paul Edmundson)
      5. Section B - Clarification is needed on how "school day" is defined during the appeals process as classes are now offered 7 days a week. (Brian Reese)
      6. Section B,6a - A question arose regarding this procedure ("Appeals of Graduate Program Actions or Decisions").  Why is this not listed for Undergraduate programs also? (Dr. Taylor Ellis)
      7. Section B,6a - In the second paragraph, it states a student will be removed "from courses currently being taken".  Is this from all classes or only the classes in the graduate program?  (Elizabeth Corker)
      8. Section B,6d (2)(a) - Why is the student given a year to appeal formally in a graduate program?  It seems long - please clarify (Brian Reese)
      9. Section B6 - Several Committees are listed in the Graduate Appeals process:
        a. The Appeals Subcommittee of the Graduate Council (B,6b)
        b. The unit graduate committee for graduate student grievances [B,6d(2)(B)]
        c. The College graduate committee [B,6d(2)(D)]
        d. The Appeals Subcommittee of the Graduate Council of the Faculty Senate [B,6d(2)(F)]
Clarification is needed on who comprises these committees and how they are selected. (Elizabeth Corker)
      Other Items presented:
Representatives from STRIKE on campus noted that the tobacco policies for the University were not listed in the Golden Rule.  They propose that the University's tobacco and smoking policy be placed in the Golden Rule in the Drug Free Workplace/Drug Free Schools Policy section.
